Real-time technology to increase truck driver safety in Vic

Transport experts will gather in Melbourne this week to show how intelligent transport systems could increase safety for truck drivers on Victorian highways.

Speaking at the Intelligent Transport Systems Summit at the Crown, WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff Principal ITS Engineer Scott Benjamin explained the system will be designed to give truck drivers real-time information about the availability of truck parking bays.

“Real-time information, displayed on signage, can help reduce the likelihood of drivers stopping in potentially hazardous locations,” Benjamin said.

“It can also provide rest area options to ensure drivers comply with heavy vehicle driver regulations.

“This design project is strongly focused on the safety benefits for truck drivers on one of Australia’s busiest freight routes.”

Benjamin said the project deliverables will include an analysis of available technology and a proof of concept. He will be speaking more about the technology for the Hume Highway on Thursday, 14 May from noon.

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff Client Director for Transport (Victoria) Tim Gosbell said this system is one example of the many emerging technologies that will be on display at the summit.

“This conference attracts the leading ITS thinkers. With the ITS World Congress coming to Melbourne next year, this is a great preview of what Australia has to offer,” he said.

The ITS Summit is being co-located with the National Electronic Tolling Forum at the Crown Conference Casino between 12-14 May. For more information, visit the website: https://www.its-australia.com.au/events/australian-its-summit-netc-2015/.
