Pokemon Go prompts construction site safety concerns
According to WorkSafe WA, Pokemon Go players are causing safety concerns by illegally accessing construction sites.
Commissioner Lex McCulloch said reports had been received that players are entering construction sites to pursue the virtual Pokemon characters that pop up on the game. WorkSafe has issued a warning about the dangers posed by this activity.
“Anyone who accesses construction sites without permission is not only risking trespass charges, but also risking their personal safety due to the multiple hazards that can exist on these sites,” McCulloch said.
WorkSafe has also reminded employers who have control over construction sites that they have a duty of care under workplace safety and health laws to ensure that people not involved with the site are not exposed to its hazards.
“This usually means adequate fencing and signage on large construction sites and at least warning signs on smaller sites,” said McCulloch.
However, reports have indicated that Pokemon Go players are simply ignoring warning signage and barriers.
“I strongly urge Pokemon Go players to take note of the warnings issued within the game and not enter hazardous sites where there is a risk of injury or legal action,” said McCulloch.
“I further urge parents of children playing the game to warn them against entering hazardous construction sites.”
