Agencies link for construction safety project
Inspectors from WorkCover NSW and the Victorian WorkCover Authority will visit construction sites in Mildura and Wentworth this week to raise awareness of the similarities between each state’s safety laws and the ease of working across the border.
The visits are being conducted to dispel the myth that construction companies have to comply with a different set of work health and safety laws if they operate across the border.
The general manager of WorkCover NSW’s Work Health and Safety Division, John Watson, said the project’s focus was on making border construction sites safer and more productive.
“WorkCover NSW recently launched a project to improve safety in the NSW house construction industry after more than 150 workers were seriously injured or killed on the job in the last two years,” Watson said.
“Workers in this industry also have more than double the workers compensation claims for permanent disability than any other industry.
“To improve health and safety on NSW house construction sites, an action plan has been developed which outlines how we will work with industry to improve safety and productivity on NSW construction sites.
“Through this project we aim to reinforce the importance of work health and safety to construction businesses and workers on either side of the border so that fewer families experience the devastating impact of a workplace injury.”
Watson added that regardless of which state you work in, the requirements for a safe worksite are the same.
“What’s considered a hazard in Victoria is also considered a hazard in NSW,” Watson said.
“Similarly, effective risk control is also consistent on either side of the border.
“During the visits, inspectors will pay particular attention to site housekeeping, planning, supervision and ensuring safe work method statements are in place.
“Inspectors will also be available to provide advice and assistance to local builders and subcontractors about safety on their construction site.
“At the end of the day, we want workers to return home safely to their families and friends.
“We hope this week’s visits will help address any construction industry misperceptions about safety laws and results in safer, more productive construction sites throughout the border region.”
