Mechanical engineering update - ExDes failures

Wednesday, 16 October, 2013

A report prepared for NSW Mine Safety by an engineering consultant has identified an improvement in the failure rate of explosion protected diesel engine systems. The rate has reduced to less than 20% (per 100 registered ExDes) over the last three years. However, the rate is still too high and further improvements are needed.

All ExDes failures are reportable under clause 56(1)(m) of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Regulation 2006.

A new Mechanical Engineering Update MU13-03 has been published to highlight recommendations and strategies to further reduce the incidence of ExDes failures. The update also includes a copy of the report.

Mechanical Engineering Updates are available on the department’s website at: www.nsw.gov.au/safety/resources/mechanical/mechanical-engineering-updates.
