New first aid Code of Practice for South Australia
New arrangements on first aid kits and first aid training apply in South Australian workplaces came into effect as of 10 December.
SafeWork SA says the new approved Code of Practice for First Aid in the Workplace is now in effect after a 12-month transition period.
The new code provides a more up-to-date and best-practice approach to first aid. It also gives workplaces the flexibility to tailor their first aid arrangements to suit their type of business and better aligns South Australia with arrangements interstate.
“Under the new code, first aid kits can be smaller, will cover more types of injuries and should reduce wastage,” says Acting Executive Director Bryan Russell. “However, the new code also lifts requirements for trained first aiders to a standard more relevant to current workplace needs.
“While some businesses will need to have people trained, this is offset by SA recognising as acceptable the Basic Emergency Life Support course, which is a one-day or half-day course costing around $90 and is tax deductible.
“However, many vocational courses (eg, motor mechanics or farm workers) also incorporate first aid into their basic training.
“Many employers may also find that they already have someone trained in first aid in their workplace, who has been trained as part of their vocational training course or through volunteering in organisations like the CFS.
“First aid trainees may well find their lifesaving skills useful in situations other than workplaces; hence the new code represents a vital opportunity to expand the base of such knowledge to the benefit of the entire community.”
