SWA releases National Return to Work Strategy

Safe Work Australia (SWA) has released its National Return to Work Strategy 2020–2030 in a bid to minimise the impact of work-related injury and illness, better support workers’ recovery and improve their capacity to work. Every year, more than half a million Australians suffer a work-related injury or illness, impacting not only the workers’ lives, but those of their families and communities, according to SWA.

To help mitigate this, the regulator partnered with governments, businesses, industry and unions to develop a what it describes as a “widely supported, evidence-based plan” designed to improve workers’ outcomes and allow them to return to work in a timely, safe and sustainable manner. While each body previously worked separately on return to work issues, SWA Chief Executive Officer Michelle Baxter believes this new strategy “paves the way for ongoing national collaboration”.

SWA said the strategy is designed for work and workplace influencers, including policymakers, workers compensation authorities, employers, union and industry groups, insurers and claims management organisations, treating health practitioners, workplace rehabilitation providers and other worker advocates.

Stakeholders can access the strategy via the SWA website.
