Victoria targets mobile cranes
Mobile crane operations on worksites will be the feature of a new WorkSafe campaign beginning in Victoria this month.
Construction and utilities director at WorkSafe Vic, Geoff Thomas said mobile cranes are high risk plant, with nearly 50 incidents reported to WorkSafe in 2006.
"When something goes wrong with this type of equipment the consequences can be catastrophic," he said.
"WorkSafe inspectors encounter many serious incidents involving mobile cranes which would not have happened if basic safe operating procedures were observed."
Inspectors will check mobile cranes and associated lifting gear to ensure they are being used safely and that essential inspections and maintenance have occurred.
WorkSafe will also expect mobile cranes to have the required documentation, such as operation manuals, plant registration, operators' certificates and logbooks.
Inspectors will take compliance action if dangerous situations are identified or where non-compliance with health and safety laws is found.
Businesses should adopt the guidance found in WorkSafe Vic's Code of Practice for Plant and the relevant Australian standards to ensure compliance.
