SA focus on small business safety

Tuesday, 10 June, 2008

Small business will be the focus of the next phase of South Australia’s key workplace safety program.

The SafeWork Industry Improvement Programme was launched in April last year to reduce the incidence and cost of work-related injury by 4% per annum, with the aim of a 40% reduction by 2012.

“After analysing the injury data, SafeWork SA has been able to identify specific workplaces overrepresented in the injury rates,” says executive director, Michele Patterson.

”Preparation for this project has allowed us to identify the 39% of employers who account for 50% of small business workers compensation claims. “

“These cover the industry sectors of construction; automotive;
grain, animal and mixed farming; hospitality; transport and storage; metal products manufacturing; wood, board and furniture manufacturing; and fruit and vegetable growing.”

The program will include industry forums, online resources and an information package.

The information will cover legal responsibilities, job safety, improvement plans and emergency procedures.
