Safety warning for SA

Monday, 21 August, 2006

SafeWork SA has issued a safety warning following a run of four workplace accidents in one 24-hour period.

"We have had four workplace accidents in 24 hours and in some cases serious injuries have resulted," said SafeWork acting director of frontline services, Neill Baker.

The SA regulator took the opportunity to stress the importance of conducting workplace risk assessments and praised the safety regime at Elders in Strathalbyn after a recent chemical spill.

An investigation into the incident found that all the necessary precautions were in place and all correct procedures had been followed.

"It shows that the time and attention that people invest in safety at work can help prevent a death or serious injury," Baker said.

"We would also like to remind employers of their legal obligation to advise WorkSafe SA of serious workplace incidents to ensure these matters are investigated promptly and properly."
