WorkSafe Victoria probes fatal Wallan train crash

WorkSafe Victoria is investigating the derailment of a passenger train, which led to the deaths of a 49-year-old train pilot and a 54-year-old ACT-based driver. It is believed the 49-year-old pilot boarded the NSW operated service at Kilmore East to escort the train through a section of track where automated signalling was not in operation.

The Sydney-Melbourne passenger train derailed in Wallan, Victoria. The deaths bring the state’s workplace fatality toll to eight for 2020, three more than at the same time last year.
