New handbook on using earthmoving equipment near overhead power lines

Wednesday, 24 February, 2010

A new WorkSafe handbook ‘Using earthmoving equipment near overhead electrical assets’ is available online from www.worksafe.vic.gov.au.

The handbook provides simplified guidance for employers and operators of earthmoving equipment, based on existing WorkSafe ‘No Go Zone’ publications. It outlines how to establish safe work procedures using knowledge of the equipment’s design limits and the overhead electrical assets.

Work near overhead power lines and associated equipment is classified as high-risk construction work under the Occupational Health & Safety Regulations 2007.

Employers and contractors have to meet obligations under the Electrical Safety Act 1998 and the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004.

WorkSafe Victoria state that companies implementing the guidelines in the new handbook will meet OHS obligations regarding the risks involved with this work.
