Worker representatives vital for offshore safety
Health and safety representatives (HSRs) play a pivotal role in keeping offshore oil and gas facilities safe and it is important they fully understand their role and the relevant legislation, according to Australia’s National Offshore Petroleum Safety Authority (NOPSA).
“These elected representatives can help workers raise safety issues within their workplace and can assist in resolving the issues with their employers and with facility operators,” said John Clegg, CEO of NOPSA.
NOPSA has released a guidebook for HSRs that explains the legislation governing offshore safety, their role within the system and how to provide effective representation on health and safety matters.
“The role of an HSR is vital in the overall offshore safety regime, as both the industry and its workforce are empowered to identify and report potential hazards and to ensure that control measures are implemented,” Clegg said.
“Health and safety for Australia’s offshore petroleum industry is regulated by NOPSA through the safety case regime. This world-class regulatory framework supports high standards of health and safety behaviour within the offshore industry.
The guide provides tips on communicating with fellow workers and employers, an easy-to-read explanation of the legislation and links to further sources of information.
The HSR 2008 Handbook is now available on the NOPSA website.
