Safe Work Australia has released its top seven seminars on how to design out hazards before they enter the workplace.

The seminars are part of the 2015 Virtual Seminar Series, which are available to access online as a free resource for workplaces.

The videos can be accessed on the Safe Work Australia website or YouTube channel, or can be listened to as podcasts from both Soundcloud and iTunes. Each seminar comes with a transcript and closed captioning.

1. Applying good work design in construction’s complex supply chains

This seminar will explore how companies in the construction industry’s supply chains can work together with speakers discussing how to apply safe design principles and improve work health and safety in construction.

Presented by ACT Work Safety Commissioner Mark McCabe, Professor Helen Lingard from RMIT University and Dr Ross Trethewy from Lendlease Building. Listen to the podcast.

2. Designing safe machinery

Poorly designed machinery can kill. This seminar examines how to design deadly hazards and risks out of machinery before it enters the workplace.

Presented by Peter Dunphy from WorkCover NSW, Dr Liz Bluff from the Australian National University and Wes Wilkinson of Work Systems Technology.

3. Good work through effective design case study

This seminar presents industry case studies by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland, showing how good work design improves the health and safety of workers and increases business performance. Listen to the podcast.

4. Good work design and applying it to psychosocial risks

This seminar, presented by Professor Sharon Parker from the University of Western Australia, shows how employers in any industry can use the principles of good work design to protect their workers’ psychological and physical health. Listen to the podcast.

5. The role of the accidental design professional

A range of ‘accidental designers’ decide how work is done — from the CEO to the IT engineer to the HR executive — and their decisions can greatly influence the safety of work.

Presented by Risk Engineering Society President Geoff Hurst, ergonomist Barbara McPhee and Peter Holmes from National Australia Bank.

6. Good work through effective leadership

This seminar by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland shows how workplace leaders can design good work to influence the safety culture of their own business, supply chain and in the broader community. Listen to the podcast.

7. Demystifying return-to-work coordination

Also by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland, this seminar explains how a well-planned return-to-work program will benefit workers and businesses, reducing lost time and improving medical, psychological and financial outcomes. Listen to the podcast.
