Play it safe with free safety seminars
Each day of The Safety Show Sydney (being held from 3-5 September at the Sydney Showground) will feature six presentations covering an array of topics including how technology is changing the way we undertake on-site safety, emergency planning, contractor management, OHS program planning and funding, PPE industry updates and an overview of the latest legislation.
The Discussion Panel: Fall prevention industry crisis summit will be facilitated by Michael Tooma, Partner at Norton Rose Fulbright, and will feature top industry representatives. It will aim to lift the safety of fall prevention installations for both the installers and those who rely on this life-saving equipment.
Michael Tooma will also present a workshop on bullying called Bullying: What is it, why does it matter and how do we stop it? The Implications of a Changing Legal and Regulatory Landscape.
“Bullying prevention [is] one of the biggest workplace management challenges of our times,” says Tooma. “There are important legal developments in this area that anyone with managerial responsibilities cannot afford to miss.
“With new legislation allowing the Fair Work Commission to intervene in bullying matters and a draft code of practice, the landscape of bullying offences is experiencing a significant shift. Persons conducting a business or undertaking now have new legal WHS obligations in relation to bullying, and risk punishment under civil penalty clauses if they fail to do so. This workshop will provide practical guidance on the legal obligations and strategies for preventing bullying, and is essential for anyone conducting a business or undertaking.”
Other presentations at The Safety Show Sydney include:
- Contractor Management OHS: How to plan it, fund it and get everyone on board - Brenton Hampson, National Sales Manager of Workplace Access and Safety, will share the practical secrets behind planning and funding safety projects on worksites that senior management never see.
- Contractor Management - Adrianne Strachan, Senior Consultant at the National Safety Council Australia, will start you on the journey in understanding your WHS legislative requirements and the expectations of the organisations engaging contractors. The seminar will briefly describe WHS approaches to low-risk, short-term contracts to high-risk and/or major construction works. The information provided will help organisations recognise their responsibilities and plan for activities such as monitoring, supervision, consultation, communication and reporting.
- Lethal ladders: new research calls for fundamental rethink of AS/NZS1657 - Carl Sachs, Managing Director, Workplace Access & Safety, will reflect on a rethink of AS/NZS1657 and how this will have a significant impact on height safety around the country.
